Cosmetic Scar Revision
Scar revision can be a great way to get rid of or lessen the appearance of unwanted scars left on your body from an old accident, operation, or injury.
Depending on the type of scar, there are a few different techniques that can be used for removal or revision.
Scar excision – If there is sufficient adjacent skin, the scar can be removed and the skin is closed around it.
Z or W plasty – The original scar is repositioned to be better camouflaged by existing features, like lines or creases on your body.
Skin grafting – The scar is surgically removed and skin from another part of the body is used to cover the area if the scar area is large (like burns)
Skin flap – Similar to a skin graft, skin and the tissue below the skin are moved from another part of the body to cover the site.
Because different parts of the body heal at different rates, recovery times and expectations vary depending on your procedure. At your consultation with Dr. Rodriguez, he will discuss expectations and predicted outcomes with you to ensure you know what to expect during and after the procedure. With any kind of scar revision, it’s very important to follow your surgeon’s instructions after surgery to make sure the wound heals properly. It is also important to remember that no scar can be removed completely. It all depends on the size and position of your scar, your skin type and how well you take care of it after the procedure.
